It’s been a long time coming, but the insanely high-budgeted sequels to 2009’s Avatar movie begin shooting today.

Unusually, all four(!) sequels are being shot at once, and the estimated budget for them is currently sitting at a whopping $1 billion USD. The second instalment in James Cameron’s CGI heavy franchise is currently set to release in 2020, though this may change considering the amount of post-production involved in these movies.

The world of Avatar may have been forgotten by a lot of people considering it’s been eight years since the film’s release, but there’s been a recent push by the Avatar marketing team to help bring the films back into the spotlight, including the recent addition of a “Pandora” themed park at Walt Disney World. Described as “celebrating the magic of nature”, guests at the park can enjoy Avatar-themed rides and cuisine, and even “adopt” their very own Banshee pet to take home with them. “The mountain banshee has come to symbolize our continued commitment to the environment,” said Cody Hampton, part of the Disney Parks Merchandise team, “Before guests depart Windtraders, Naturalists will encourage them to make a pledge to respect and protect the natural world on Pandora and back home on Earth.”

Personally, the first film didn’t really do much for me except for looking pretty, but if Cameron’s world can help teach a new generation that we should protect and care for our fragile environment, then I’m all for the sequels.
