The Detail Porn Of Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an almost ludicrously large game with an equally impressive amount of things to see and do. Whether you want to take on the robust odyssey that is the story, get drunk day and night, or live in the forest and become one with the deer, there’s no shortage of ways to experience the game.

You could also, if you’re like me, spend hours upon hours gawking at the little details of the game. The infamous horse balls are probably the obvious thing people will point at as Rockstar’s (arguably overly) obsessive attention to detail, but there’s a tonne of other things in the game that are small but welcome quirks.

Here are just a few of my favourites.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Little Details

– If you walk snow around blood, the snow will lightly dust the blood and make it less apparent. Likewise, if you walk directly on the blood, it will deform in shape.

– If Arthur is bitten by a snake, you can see the mark when he goes into first-person even after he’s taken a cure.

Red Dead Redemption 2

– Wearing a big hat will cause Arthur’s vision to be slight obscured when going into first-person. This is actually kind of annoying as it’s just in the way, but anyway.

– Alligators will eat the corpses you throw into the bayou. I had to shut someone up in Saint Denis who was just repeating the same lines over and over again as I was trying to shop, so I hogtied them, threw in the water in the nearby swamp, and then watched them get eaten. In my defence, they were so annoying.

I didn’t actually manage to capture the exact moment, sadly.

– You can lasso animals/people through mud and snow, which will leave a visible trail behind of where they’ve been dragged.

– A random encounter sees you saving the life of a man with an infected arm, which you can watch as the doctor amputates. Much later, a very similar looking man sans an appendage falls dead off his horse. Oh well, you tried.

– There’s a stray cat that you can bump into in Saint Denis. It looks like the townspeople leave food out for it.

– If you cause an injury to a shopkeeper during a robbery, they will later show the signs of that injury. I held this guy up and pistol whipped him, came back a day later and he was not very happy with me but still happy to take my money.

– People will come up to you in bars and recount your misdeeds.

Red Dead 2

– If you’re a bad boy at all, you can talk to the women in camp at seemingly random intervals and you will confess your crimes to them.

Red Dead 2

– Jack will sleep with the book that you found him as part of a companion quest. John will also kick you out if you don’t give him space.

Red Dead 2

– The animations for Arthur chopping wood.

Red Dead Redemption 2 chores

– You can throw corpses onto fires to burn them, but you will eventually suffocate the flames and it will extinguish.

Red Dead Redemption 2

– If you feed your horse a whole bunch of food, they will poop a whole bunch more.

– If you don’t wash for a while or use cover scent lotion, Arthur’s stinky musk will be visible behind when you go into Dead Eye during hunting.

– Possums will play possum with you, going so far as to collapse “dead” in their tracks on a road if you’re riding near them.

– If you keep antagonizing the people of camp, John will eventually walk up to you and knock you out.
