Taika Waititi to Direct New Star Wars Movie

May the fourth brings good tidings indeed.

Disney just announced that Oscar winning director Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film. Joining Waititi on scriptwriting duties will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who was the co-writer on 1917 with Sam Mendes and is also the co-writer for Edgar Wright’s upcoming film Last Night in Soho.

In the same announcement, it was also mentioned that Leslye Headland, co-creator of the Netflix series Russian Doll, is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney Plus. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series.

No release date has been set for Waititi’s Star Wars movie, though it must be noted that Waititi has quite a bit on his plate. Waititi’s upcoming Searchlight Pictures soccer film Next Goal Wins is currently in post-production, and he still has his commitment to Marvel for the next Thor installment Thor: Love and Thunder, which was supposed to be released February 11, 2022.

Disney still has a December 16, 2022 date set aside for an untitled Star Wars feature, which was reserved for the Star Wars movie Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were going to create before they decided to walk away from the project due to their other commitments.

It remains to be seen if that date will be taken up by Waititi’s Star Wars movie, but the greater possibility is that the date will be pushed back or replaced by another film’s release due to the current pandemic’s impact on the film industry.
