Taboo: Season 2 – Everything You Should Know

Taboo
Taboo

Taboo is a BBC drama series created by Tom and Chips Hardy and Steven Knight that first premiered in 2017. Set in 1814 London, adventurer James Delaney (played by Tom Hardy) returns after spending around a decade in Africa. His return marks an important period in history, as tensions between the British Empire and Americans are at an all-time high. After attending his father’s funeral, James is left the sole claimant of his inheritance – an inheritance that holds something which the British government, the Americans, and the East India Trading Company are all eager to get their hands on. Caught between greedy and powerful enemies, Delaney and his allies conjure a scheme to get themselves out alive.

When the first season ended, Delaney and most of his group were able to escape the British authorities by ship. However, instead of sailing away to America as first expected, Delaney instead charters a course for Ponta Delgarda in Portugal, where he goes to look for an American agent called ‘Colonade.’ With such a cliff-hanger of an ending, fans have been eagerly waiting for Taboo: Season 2. After six years since the release of the first season, where is it?

When Is Taboo: Season 2 Being Released?

Due to their respective work schedules, the Hardy pair and Steven Knight haven’t had the chance to come together to work on Taboo: Season 2. That is, up until recently. Steven Knight confirmed with Collider in 2021 that “six out of eight [episodes] are written”, and in March 2023, he also mentioned with Radio Times that he had a meeting with Tom Hardy to discuss work on the second season.

While there isn’t a projected release date or even a trailer for Season 2, this is promising information for Taboo fans, confirming that a sequel is at least on the table.

What Is Taboo: Season 2 About?

While fans imagined that Taboo: Season 2 would be a continuation of James Delaney’s story, that is just one of the ideas that Tom Hardy has for the follow-up season. In an interview he did with Esquire in 2021, Hardy said that the show could also follow James Delaney’s time before the events of the first season, or even do a time jump and follow another member of the Delaney family in a different historical period while still keeping the tone of the first season.

Which Studio Is Making Taboo: Season 2?

Taboo is a collaboration between the Hardy family and Steven Knight, but was also produced by Scott Free London, part of the production company helmed by Ridley and Tony Scott. Additional production companies who had a hand in bringing Taboo to life were Sonar Entertainment BBC and FX Productions.

Where Will Taboo: Season 2 Be Aired?

While Taboo: Season 2 is still in production limbo, the future looks bright for the follow-up season. Until then, Taboo: Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer. You can also buy a DVD or Blu-ray copy of the first season.
