Sylvester Stallone Finishes First Draft of Creed II, Ivan Drago Will Return

Sylvester Stallone made a rather odd Instagram post over the weekend. Along with a photo of a handwritten first draft screenplay that’s just about the sloppiest-looking thing I’ve ever seen, Stallone commented that ol’ Ivan Drago will be appearing in the Creed sequel.

Well. No indication of what role Drago will play in the movie, but one can only hope that he won’t actually be fighting Adonis Creed in a boxing ring. Although, who knows. After all, in the last proper Rocky film, the fighter got into the ring at sixty.

This plot point kinda-sorta makes sense, of course, since Drago killed Adonis’s father in the ring.

One can only hope that Ryan Coogler, the writer-director behind the first Creed film, will come back. Or someone else should direct. Anyone but Stallone. His stuff works best when his eccentricities are reigned in by a strong collaborator. Two of the best films he was involved with, the original Rocky and Rambo movies, he wrote and starred in, but did not direct.

Either way, I’ll probably be there on opening night since the Rocky movies and the Creed offshoots are my favorite film franchises. I know, I know. But the heart wants what it wants.
