Oh, what a Wonderful day. Today marks the release of the highly anticipated Super Mario Wonder, the latest addition to the iconic Super Mario series and the most elephant-focused game in the series yet (which is more important).

Super Mario Wonder for Switch brings a fresh twist to the side-scrolling Mario universe, combining the beloved elements of traditional Mario games with new power-ups as players look to help the Flower Kingdom. Wonder features eight characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Nabbit and Yoshi) to play as, with many unique badges to equip that give characters special abilities. Up to four players can take on a level at a time in local co-op, too.

Here’s a quick synopsis for Super Mario Bros. Wonder:

Join Mario and friends on a new 2D side-scrolling adventure full of wonder!

Every course contains its very own Wonder Flower – collect one, and anything can happen. From moving pipes to tilting terrain, singing Piranha Plants to stampeding Bulrushes, skydiving to space walks, you never know what’ll happen next. You might even transform into something totally new!

Featuring a blend of classic 2D and modern 3D gameplay, Super Mario Wonder is the first real graphical leap for classic-styled Mario since the Nintendo DS days, with Mario’s design getting a bit of an overhaul. The biggest overhaul of all, though, is Charles Martinet being replaced by Kevin Afghani as the voice of Mario, the significance of which can’t be downplayed. Good luck to Afghani, it can’t be easy to follow decades of gaming royalty.

Super Mario Wonder’s release on the Nintendo Switch is poised to compete side by side with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PS5, but what’s refreshing is how little anyone seems to be pitting them against each other. People are likely just recognising that two really good, really massive games coming out around the same time should be celebrated, actually.
