Turns out, it's more of a process than it should be.

Anyone who has played a Bethesda RPG in their time, particularly Fallout, will be acutely aware that you obtain a large variety of weapons during your playthrough. Oftentimes, you’ll run out of ammo and need to switch weapons on the fly, and scanning through your inventory everytime you want to switch weapons can be quite the challenge. Starfield is no exception, but if you don’t use the favorites features, you’ll probably die more to inventory frustration than actual enemies. Here’s how you can avoid that by using favorites in Starfield.

Starfield: How To Equip Weapons To Your Favourites

Your favorites, which are tied to the d-pad if you’re playing on controller, are essentially your hotkey items that you want to rely on in a pinch. Pressing the d-pad in any direction will slow down time while you select which item you want to equip, giving you the breathing room you might need in a gunfight when your weapon has run out of ammo.

In order to actually equip a weapon onto your favourites, you need to head into your inventory, find the weapon you want to have equipped and press the Y button. This will now allow you to place the weapon on this favorites weapon wheel of sorts, allowing you to switch to it in a moment’s notice. A good tip for those who want to spend their time crafting and upgrading in Starfield is to equip the Cutter you start the game with on this wheel, as this will allow you to quickly mine resources while exploring the Frontier.

You can also use favorites to assign consumable items, with Med Packs already assigned to the wheel by default, but the wheel can also be used for items that deal with status ailments, allowing you to recover much quicker.
