A nasty cough like this won’t take you to the endgame of your playthrough unless you cure it. Lung Damage will be the bane of your existence if you are prioritising a stealth playthrough in Starfield, as not only will you sporadically lose oxygen from time to time but also occasionally cough, making it impossible to remain undetected.
An easy way to cure it is to use an Injector, which will instantly remove the negative status effect, allowing you to breathe more easily.
Injectors are aid items that can be found as random drops on corpses, loot containers, or more reliably, first aid kits. You’ll want to pick these up if you come across them, as they will prove useful in your adventures across the universe.
If you find yourself running short, go see a doctor and choose the “I need help, Doc” dialogue option to instantly remove Lung Damage and any other negative status effects. A few doctors to visit early in your playthrough are:
- Dr. Alexei Lebedev (in the New Atlantis Residential District)
- Tali O’Shea (in the Well, New Atlantis)
- Mary Cartwright (in the Rock, Akila City)
While you’re there, you could also pick up a few Injectors for credits if you like your lungs just the way they are.
One long-term solution is to invest some points in the Decontamination Skill under the Physical tree. This skill provides a high chance of removing any negative status effects you may have. However, it does remove 1 at a time, so if you have a bunch of different ailments, it’ll reduce the chance of getting rid of the one you don’t want.
Lastly, you can just wait it out. A very tedious strategy, but a solution nonetheless. If you are out of injectors or too lazy to go to the doctors, you can simply wait for Lung Damage to heal on its own. It may not be the best method for dealing with this negative effect, but at least you can take good comfort in knowing it will be gone in time.
