Starfield: Where To Find Alkanes

Alkanes (or HnCn) is a rare resource that you can find scattered throughout Starfield’s many planets. As is typical with all gas resources, you don’t need a Cutter to acquire this material. Instead, you just need to find an Alkanes deposit and interact with it to obtain the resource. Be careful; if you stay too long over the resource, you can get some negative ailments.

If you require a large amount of this resource, you might want to invest some skill points into the Geology perk to increase your yields of this rare resource.

There are two easy-to-go-to planets that have substantial Alkanes yields, and the first is a lot sooner than you think. The moon Kreet, located in the Narion System, offers Alkanes, but you will likely skip over gathering this resource as it’s the first moon you’ll go to in Starfield. With Kreet’s discovery being so early in your playthrough, it is unlikely that you would have picked up this resource. Luckily, you can travel back anytime if you wish.

If you want a timelier location, then Tau Ceti II, located in the Tau Ceti system, will also have this valuable resource. Joining up with the Vanguard, located in the MAST Headquarters in New Atlantis, will send you there on your first mission. There are plenty of hostile creatures on this planet, but nothing a decent weapon won’t get rid of.

You can also set up an outpost at these locations to passively generate these resources if you wish.

If scavenging and farming Alkanes don’t interest you, then there is a quicker option. The UC Distribution Center in New Atlantis houses a merchant called Wen Tseng, who will sell you plenty of Alkanes for a small fee.

If you’re feeling riskier, you can always steal it from the citizens of New Atlantis and beyond, though we didn’t tell you to do so.

However you steal, farm, scavenge, or purchase this material is up to you, as Starfield offers many ways to do so. Be sure to stock up on this resource when you have the chance, as it will come in handy later on as your opportunities to build and upgrade whatever you want will dramatically increase.

Starfield is available on PC and Xbox.
