So here’s us thinking that the news of a Jumanji video game would be the weirdest video game news that’ll come out this week, but nope. THQ Nordic have busted this one out of their back pocket to the claim the title of the most unexpected announcement, possibly ever. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting a remake.

Titled SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, this remade edition of the cult classic from 2003 will be developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic. Check out the announcement trailer below.

The official video description states that Rehydrated will be a faithful remake of the original game, which suggests that the game will receive the kind of treatment that Crash Bandicoot and Spyro have gone through. The description also mentions the existence of a brand new multiplayer mode, so it seems like this isn’t just a simple upscaled port.

Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will be available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch, though no solid release date has been given. Fingers crossed that this new version of the game will become just as much of a hit with the speedrunning community as the original game was.
