Sony’s Grudge Reboot Pushed Forward For A New Summer Release Date

Grudge
Ju-On: The Grudge

Sony’s reboot of the 2004 horror flick The Grudge has been moved ahead by two months. Initially scheduled for release on August 16th 2019, the simply titled Grudge will now release on June 21st 2019.

The Grudge, based on the original Japanese supernatural horror franchise Ju-on, follows the lives of people haunted by ghosts that died experiencing extreme rage or sorrow. Ju-on has experienced eight sequels over the years including most recently, a crossover with The Ring franchise entitled Sadako vs. Kayako in 2016. The American franchise, however, only received two sequels.

Grudge has been in talks since 2014, with The Eyes Of My Mother director Nicolas Pesce set to direct. Jeff Buhler and Pesce have penned the script, with Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Takashige Ichise all returning from the 2004 remake to produce. It has been discussed that Grudge intends to keep the concept and spirit of The Grudge, but will not base itself on that film nor the Japanese original. Instead, Grudge is opting to introduce new concepts and ghosts pushing the original mythology forward.

The cast currently includes Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver, however there are no details on their roles. It is most likely that Sony pushed the film’s release date forward in attempt to appeal over the peak of summer, but in doing so may have inadvertently pit itself again Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 4, which releases on the exact same day and will absolutely destroy the box office, guaranteed.
