Sonic Superstars Spins Its Way To Release Today

While October is going by pretty fast (seriously, it feels like it was September yesterday), there’s one thing that’s gotta going fastest this month: Sonic the Hedgehog in a brand new(ish) game. Sonic Superstars is speeding out for everyone today across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, and Switch.

Here’s a quick synopsis:

“Adventure through the mystical Northstar Islands in this all-new take on classic 2D Sonic high-speed action platforming. Play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy and harness all-new Emerald powers to move and attack in dynamic new ways. Navigate gorgeous, never-before-seen environments solo or with up to 3 other players and stop Dr. Eggman, Fang, and a mysterious new adversary from converting the islands’ giant animals into Badniks before it’s too late!”

A co-op focused (though it can still be played totally single-player) spin on 2D Sonic with 3D elements that takes the bold decision to not have Green Hill Zone, Sonic Superstars focuses more on exploration and less on speed than more recent Sonic games, which makes sense as Sonic can team up with his friends — it wouldn’t be fun for your own friends to be chasing after you for the whole gameplay session. There are 11 Zones to play in across the Nothstar Islands, and while there are a few homages to the classics, this is the first almost totally fresh 2D Sonic game we’ve had in terms of levels in quite some time.

Unfortunately, new doesn’t always mean better, and while Sonic Superstars has had overall solid reviews, it’s not up there with some of October’s other big hitters. Common complaints include a janky co-op camera system and the platforming not feeling all too fun at times. Still, reviews say that it remains fun despite its flaws, so it will be interesting to see how the Sonic community reacts to it and whether or not it’s a Chaos Emerald in the rough.
