Sonic Stays at the Top, Emma Make Waves at the Box Office

There's something for everybody at the cinema this week.

According to Variety, Sonic continues its dominance at the box office this past weekend, beating out Call of the Wild (which just had its first opening weekend), 20th Century Studios’ (which now bears the Disney emblem) new adaptation of the Jack London classic tale.

Sonic ended the weekend with 26.3 million USD, while Call of the Wild raked in 25 million USD. So what can we deduce from this? Apparently animated animals are all the rage, and no matter how many movies we get about dogs, people are always willing to spend money to see another one, even if the dog is CGI.

Over at the indie scene, Variety reports that Emma made 230 thousand USD in its debut opening across 5 cinemas in New York and Los Angeles, coming in at number 1 in each location. That means a 46 thousand per-screen average, which is the highest average of any speciality opening this year so far. This definitely gives the film a good footing before it ventures into 100 theatres in 25 markets in the coming week.

This proves that despite the many adaptations Emma has received over the years, audiences are still charmed by Austen’s story and will continue to consume adaptations of her work. Emma also has a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is certified fresh by the critics.
