SNK Reveal New Samurai Shodown Game

Samurai Shodown

Today, during Sony’s pre-Tokyo Game Show event, Japanese developers SNK revealed a new installment of one of their longest running fighting game series, Samurai Shodown, or Samurai Spirits as its known in Japan. And yes, you do spell it without the W. Don’t ask me why, because I’m not sure.

Taking place in 1787, which places this game between Samurai Shodown 5 and Samurai Shodown 1 if you care about the lore, Samurai Shodown world has been beset with war and famine, while an ominous and sinister cloud darkens the air.

In the trailer, we can see classic characters like Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Earthquake, Jubei and Galford, all rendered in a lovely new 3D art style that’s reminiscent of old Japanese artwork. In fact, it looks somewhat similar to the cel-shaded graphics of Street Fighter IV, which is no bad thing mind you.

Samurai Shodown is scheduled to launch at some point in 2019. No specific platforms have been announced yet, but if SNK’s last big release, King of Fighter XIV, is anything to go by, it’ll be available on PS4 and PC at least. Are you excited? Let us know in the comments.
