Single of the Week: Wooden Arms – ‘Tide’

Another week, another great single for you to treat your ears with.

In this, the 34th week of 2014, the title of Cultured Vultures’ Single of the Week goes to the song ‘Tide’ by Norwich based septet ‘Wooden Arms’, an alternative group made up of Jeff Smith, Alex Carson, Jessica Diggins, Fynn Titford Mock, Milly Hirst, Jessica Wilson and Alex Mackenzie.

The single was released earlier this year, and has since been making waves, with appearances on the likes of BBC Radio 6 music.

The track begins with a meandering violin melody, and is soon joined by the warming vocals of Jeff Smith. The mixture of soft piano riffs and incredible warping strings is beautiful. ‘Tide’ is over five minutes long, and every single second of it is euphoric. Think Sigur Ros, but in English.

‘Tide’ is full of smooth vocals, which harmonise constantly, layered above an irresistible coming together of climactic symbols, and layers of sound so deep and warming that you could bathe in them.

A completely beautiful track, full of emotion and sensitivity, enough to make your hairs stand up on end and demand silence from an entire room full of people. Wooden Arms’ debut album, also named ‘Tide’, is released in October, which I’m really looking forward to.

A worthy recipient of single of the week, from a promising band whose future looks incredibly bright, ‘Tide’ is entirely stunning.

Enjoy.
