SINGLE OF THE WEEK: Set It Off – ‘Life Afraid’

If you’ve never been a fan of Set It Off before, you might be now, because, my word, they have changed. If the fan consensus was that the Florida four piece would swing their pop-rock style back up to the rock end of the scale, they missed the mark by a long way. Instead, the band’s latest single ‘Life Afraid’ is pop, laced with pop, with a side of pop and an extra serving of it too. But it’s bloody catchy with it.

There’s no questioning the All Time Low influence in this song. In fact, it’s no surprise that Set It Off’s previous single ‘Something New’ was co-written by ATL’s Alex Gaskarth. But once this connection wears itself out, the track takes a turn for the mainstream. ‘Life Afraid’ could give The Summer Set or even 5 Seconds of Summer a run for their money – that’s how pop we’re talking.

Once you’ve got your head around the drastic genre shift, you’ll be ready to enjoy this song. There’s no doubt it’s a corker. Just expect more club dancing and less headbanging to it. It looks like their upcoming album, Upside Down, to be released on October 7th, will be dancey.
