Single of the Week: We Were Promised Jetpacks – ‘I Keep It Composed’

After crashing down to Earth following numerous days up there in the atmosphere, I feel like I should be gifted a jetpack for I yearn to be up there again. However, seeing as these chaps have been going on about how they were promised jetpacks for a good few years now, I get the feeling it’s rather unlikely I’m going to find myself a jetpack anytime soon. My only other option is to curl into the tightest foetal position that I can muster, so that I am almost an oval – a human rugby ball if you will – and hope everything turns out for the best.

Though, it’d be nice if some giant type character booted me for a conversion , between the posts I’d go, out of the stadium, into the heavens, then out of Earth’s atmosphere. On the off chance that I am talking complete nonsense, or hoping with insanity, I will remain curled and try to keep myself composed as I listen to this week’s Single of the Week. You see, in spite of the years and years of waiting on those jetpacks they were promised, these here Scots keep it composed.

Anyway, enough of all that. Regular readers of Cultured Vultures might recognise We Were Promised Jetpacks from earlier in the year when, my lord and master, Jimmy had himself a WEE CHAT with the guys. Which, I highly recommend you read HERE. As to ‘I Keep It Composed’, it is a typically stunning spot of atmospheric indie that is very much the band’s own. This single burns slow on the hypnotic grooves of the rhythm section, sparkles through the sparse guitar melodies, and soars on the gliding vocals. The track steadily builds tension with layers before hitting its stride with the climactic crescendo.

If you’re not already familiar with the band, here’s some helpful touchstones to work out your way there; The Twilight Sad, Frightened Rabbit, early-Biffy Clyro, The Joy Formidable, Editors, Los Campesinos! OR YOU COULD JUST LISTEN TO THIS SINGLE OF THE WEEK THEN LISTEN TO THEIR ALBUMS. Speaking of which, their new album Unravelling is due out October 6th.
