Single of the Week: The Planets Collide – ‘Override’

Another Monday. Another week waiting for the weekend. Another week closer to death.

It’s not all bad though, because you know what each of those means; IT’S SINGLE OF THE WEEK TIME!

That’s right, another Monday, another week ahead of you waiting on the weekend  to break the cycle, and another week closer to the inevitable, but oh so sweet, release of death to break the cycle of all those cycles and send you seamlessly into another plain of being that exists both at the beginning and the end of everything, or just finally get some rest and rot in the ground. It’s all made sweeter though, your begrudgingly being alive, when each week you tally up another survival and we gift you with a single song to soften the blow and sweeten the deal.

This week the song is ‘Override’ and it brings The Planets Collide crashing into our lives once more. For those of you who aren’t familiar, The Planets Collide is the musical project of one Stephen Dunham who has been making all kinds of psychedelic waves through space and getting us Cultured Vultures all kinds of dazed and confused on them, starting way back when we first featured The Planets Collide in an early edition of our irregular music feature Pulse, and soon after we were able to snap up the man himself for a quite awesome exchange of Qs for As.

Anyhow, The Planets Collide have just dropped their latest single, and it sees Dunham continuing to dive further into the outer reaches using an extending chord of baggy, shoegaze, indie, and old school dance, strengthened DNA helix style around the outside with 60s and 90s psychedelia, to stop him going too far adrift and getting lost in space. ‘Override’ is a great single, but it’s not all floaty universal exploration, it’s got a underriding groove and some seriously catchy melodies to keep you dancing as you’re drifting. Plus, it’s got the short and sweet ‘Waiting Game’ on its B-Side to give you a slap, as well as tickle.
