Single of the Week: The Physics House Band – Calypso

Have you ever been to gig, shaking with excitement for the headline act, only to have your mind blown apart by the openers? That was my first experience of The Physics House Band. The year was 2013, the headline act was MONO and the venue was Shoreditch’s Village Underground. Past experience had taught me that opening acts at post-rock gigs are something of a mixed bag, but nothing could have prepared me for the storming, dissonant, funky stylings of The Physics House Band.

At that point, they were promoting their EP – Horizons/Rapture, and since then they haven’t released anything else, until now. Mercury Fountain is due out on April 21st, and we’ve just been given our first taste of it in the form of ‘Calypso’.

The heavy guitar thrashes and synth chimes which it opens with are almost reminiscent of 65daysofstatic, and as more instruments come in, that comparison solidifies. At around the minute mark though, we’re reminded of TPHB’s most potent weapon – drummer and licensed insane person Dave Morgan. His drumming on this track is as creative and erratic as ever, and it keeps you guessing right till the end. You can pre-order Mercury Fountain here.
