It’s typical, isn’t it. Just as the year closes out and the ‘albums of the year’ lists are finalised, someone throws a spanner in the works. This year, it looks like Little Simz is going to be the one to do it. Her last album was a little over a year ago, and in that time she’s risen to become one of the biggest stars on the UK rap scene, and deservedly so, she’s one of the most gifted storytellers in the game.
Poison Ivy definitely captures the same Simz vibe as the stuff on A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons, but there’s something a bit deeper going on in the production, it feels funkier, and almost more reminiscent of the jazzy approach that’s become so prevalent in West Coast hip-hop in recent months. Still in Wonderland drops on Friday.
