Single of the Week: Leikeli47 – ‘My Ex is a Ho’

Leikeli47 is determined to own your summer, and will succeed. Her debut EP dropped with spring in full swing, to lay the groundwork for summer domination, coming with its own mission statement like promise of such a thing with the track ‘Fuck the Summer Up’ – further threatened by the song’s hook-line mantra of ‘I’ma fuck the summer up’ looping throughout like instrumentation. Now, with that EP having barely had the chance to get everyone infected, Leikeli47 is already thrashing out her debut album as fast as she can, and because that’s just not soon enough, Leikeli47 has just dropped a new track in the shape of ‘My Ex is a Ho’ and it’s our Single of the Week.

For those who have been missing out and are not yet in the know, though will soon be sporting ski masks as homage, we recently covered Leikeli47 in an especially awesome, and rap-centric, edition of Pulse: New Music You Need, but here’s the basics anyway; Leikeli47 is pretty tight-lipped and, well, tight-masked when it comes to her identity, going only by her nom de plume and represented only by a ski mask, but she predominantly lets her music speak for itself, and isn’t at all tight-lipped when it comes to tearing up her tracks by way of her technical flow with its varied deliveries.

‘My Ex is a Ho’ is as good a representation of that as any, and a perfect introduction to it if you’ve not experienced Leikeli47 before; riding atop an atmospheric and tense yet danceable beat, kind of like the sound of getting paranoid in the club, Leikeli47’s vocals are the star of the show as she veers from a spacious and percussive flow, chant hooks, gentle whispers of spoken word, detached cool, strained edge, and a contagious, almost cartoonish, mania as busts out that main chorus line, ‘I had to call a time out before they started shooting!’

The lyrics only add to this, though, what with their combining a diatribe directed at the titular ex, alongside references to revered college basketball coaches Dean Smith and John Wooden. All in all, it’s further evidence as to the sure fire certainty of Leikeli47’s eventual takeover, and summer domination before it’s through. Most importantly, though, it’s your Single of the Week.
