Rock music is suffering. Turn on the radio these days on your morning jaunt to work and you would count yourself lucky to be greeted by the sounds of a drumkit being beaten to death and a guitar being slapped around. No, the best you can hope for is Nick Grimshaw’s ego finally getting the best of him as he dedicates his whole show to himself and his stupid fucking hair as he declares himself the Lizard Queen.
If you look beneath the surface of the current music scene, however, you will find an impressive swathe of rock bands that are just begging to have their opportunity in the limelight. Drenge are one of those acts and one that you should have been keeping an eye on ever since their impressive debut just under two years ago. After creating a few murmurs and nods of approval with their self-titled first album, the boys are back with Undertow: one of the finest albums of the year so far.
The album as a whole is a delicious cocktail of reverb and attitude, but the standout has to be its second track, Side by Side. A tone-setter for the album, it’s heady mix of -for lack of a better word- funky drumming from Rory Loveless which wastes no time in proving its mettle, backed up by jaded vocals from his brother Eoin.
