A little under a year ago, London based pop artist WALWIN released his debut album Sleepless. Before working on his solo project, he worked with, performed in and produced for a variety of bands and artists. This collective experience combined together made Sleepless a clean, polished effort, if a little repetitive. ‘Again & Again’ is the latest single to be taken from the album.
Again & Again is a fun, upbeat, colourful track, the sort you put on a pre-drinks or summer barbeque playlist. WALWIN’s roots in pop-punk are reflected with the Mayday Parade-esque lyricism whilst the instrumental is blatantly influenced by his more up to date interest with EDM. In effect, ‘Again & Again’ is like Calvin Harris remixing The Summer Set.
Once an album has been out for a year the tracks get to get old and tiresome, but ‘Again & Again’ is a welcome exception. Last year I dubbed this once of my favourite pop songs of the summer, and now it’s been released with a music video, hopefully I can count it again for this year. With an emancipating energy and addictive chorus, there’s no wonder it’s a fan favourite. It’s Sleepless‘ stand out track.
From a truly brilliant track, to a video that looks like it cut all the corners. WALWIN’s video diaries show he knows what he’s doing with a camera, so the lackluster video makes no sense. It’s no secret I find dancing in front of lights the most mundane visual entertainment the music industry has to offer, but it’s worst when it fails to complement the music.
Where is the track’s energy in the slowly changing lights? Where’s the emotion in a silhouette? This should be an exciting, enticing video, one that encapsulates all the passionate story of the song. But it isn’t.
