Is Rocket Arena really that bad?

2020 has been one hell of a ride and, thankfully, it’s almost over. While December is a time to come together, many of us will be stuck at home, social distancing and playing video games. This festive month brings along 3 new free PlayStation Plus games for players to try out on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: Rocket Arena (PS4), Just Cause 4 (PS4) and Worms Rumble (PS5 and PS4). Do you want to know if these free games are worth a speck of your valuable time? Read on and I’ll break it down for you.

Rocket Arena

Rocket Arena
Rocket Arena

Rocket Arena is a third-person shooter developed by Final Strike Games where the main goal is to knock opponents out of the map. It comes off as a kind of mix between Overwatch and Super Smash Bros, a character-based shooter where if you hit enemies enough they fly out of the map.

Your first 5 matches of Rocket Arena are going to be against bots, which can get pretty boring as you spend most of your time repeatedly firing at enemies in the air until they get knocked out of the game. After that, you get to play against real players which becomes a bit more entertaining because they can actually hit you, unlike the bots who have terrible aim unless you’re at point blank range. Even the online mode can get a little dicey though, especially if you’re not playing with friends. If your team’s spawns get staggered and the opposing team stays together, it can become frustrating quickly. If you’re on the side that is winning, it can become ridiculously easy and boring.

Rocket Arena isn’t all bad though, as there are multiple different characters to experiment with (some much stronger than others), who all have different abilities and weapons. Additionally, there is a whole lot of value in playing with friends and coordinating your attacks, and it can make the game a lot more enjoyable. If you have friends to play with and are looking for something to play, this game could be fun to try out. Otherwise, Rocket Arena isn’t all that great and I wouldn’t recommend adding it to your list of games to play this holiday season.

Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4
Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4 is an action-adventure RPG developed by Avalanche Studios. You play as Rico, an adventurer, dictator-dismantler and part-time demi-god who loves to destroy things, especially when they’re red.

Just Cause 4 is pretty much what you’d expect if you’ve played the previous entries in the franchise. The protagonist starts a rebellion against an oppressive authoritative government, and then uses a ton of fun toys and gadgets to destroy everything that they own, which often includes some kind of big weapon. In Just Cause 4, Rico’s enemies have so-called “weather weapons”, which are facilities that can control the weather to their advantage by causing lightning storms, blizzards and sandstorms. The main goal of the game is to take down all of these facilities, while moving your allies in the Army of Chaos ahead.

The player controls which territories the rebels take, and the only way to obtain more soldiers to advance the front line is by causing chaos. This means blowing stuff up, and while destroying things is fun for a while, it gets old really fast. The repetitive nature of the main aspect of the game may turn a lot of people off. If you’re one of those people and want to keep having fun in Just Cause 4, here’s a tip: try taking down the facilities in new and creative ways. Getting into the habit of always blowing everything up from a chopper makes it all that more boring.

I would recommend picking up this game though, because it’s fun for a while and “free”, after all.

Worms Rumble is an arena-based game developed by Team17 where you fight other worms in real-time combat. It’s a step in a different direction from the developer that made Worms, the 25 year-old turn-based game where you try to blow up your friends, and it’s absolutely crazy.

The few rounds I’ve played of Worms Rumble have been action-packed and unpredictable, leaving me wanting more. It’s so much different than Battlegrounds yet still has the same feel. The weapons from the previous game are all still here: a Bazooka to blow other worms up, a shotgun for close range or the holy hand grenade for those of you who are fans of chaos. Players can also fly around with a jetpack, use a grappling hook or just simply tuck-and-roll to get across the map quickly or out of harm’s way. There are so many different ways to conquer your enemies that it can get really intense and enjoyable.

Worms Rumble does have its set of issues, though. As a new game, it’s common for network issues to occur — I have been kicked out of a few games due to server issues, as well as just had the game completely freeze on me once or twice. Although these issues can be annoying, the developer Team17 will likely put out fixes for these and improve the game altogether. I recommend picking this game up because it’s a blast to play solo or with friends, and I look forward to what comes next in the wacky world of Worms.
