The official trailer for David Ayer’s new film The Tax Collector has just been released, and it seems Ayer is back to his roots for this one. In the film, we see Shia LeBeouf (Creeper) and Bobby Soto (David) as “tax collectors” working for the crime lord Wizard. They go around collecting his cut from the profits of local gangs’ illicit dealings. But when Wizard’s old rival returns to Los Angeles from Mexico, the business is upended, and David finds himself desperate to protect what matters more to him than anything else: his family.
Considering how Suicide Squad turned out, and the mixed reviews for Bright, it’s no wonder Ayer is returning to what he knows, the kind of filmmaking that put him on the map in the first place. LeBeouf’s Creeper reminds us of Denzel Washington’s character in Training Day, which Ayer wrote. The whole dynamic of the pair driving around to collect taxes does feel reminiscent of Training Day, no?
The last time Ayer and LeBeouf worked together was for the movie Fury, which was a success, and LeBeouf broke our hearts in his turn as bible-quoting Boyd Swan. So let’s hope this pairing delivers again.
The film also stars Cinthya Carmona, Lana Parilla and George Lopez, and will be released August 7, in theaters, digital and on-demand.
