Shadow of the Tomb Raider Seemingly Releases This September

There are a whole bunch of accidents surrounding Shadow of the Tomb Raider: the next big foray into the world of Lara Croft. First off, there was a laptop on a subway which revealed the game’s name, and now some sloppy coding has revealed the release date ahead of time.

If you visit the Tomb Raider site, you will see a countdown to tomorrow, which is presumably when the game’s release date was initially meant to be revealed. However, quickly scurrying around in the HTML code will bring up the release date:

“Shadow of The Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story. Available September 14th 2018”

With some more digging, what’s interesting to note is that not only did it reveal that this is to be the last outing for the origins thread of Lara Croft’s tomb raiding, but that it’s also developed by Eidos Montreal: the guys behind Mankind Divided and Human Revolution — Crystal Dynamics have been with the franchise since Tomb Raider: Legend, but have now been shifted over to work on the adaptation for The Avengers. It’s also not a timed exclusive for Xbox One like Rise of the Tomb Raider as it’s also listed as coming to PS4 and PC.

Funnily enough, the release date reveal tomorrow seems to be intentionally aligned with the release of the Tomb Raider adaptation starring Alicia Vikander, which, by all accounts, doesn’t look too bad — well, for a movie based on a video game, anyway.

Thanks to Kotaku for this information, who also heard that some members of the press have been invited to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider so we should expect to see some gameplay soon.

It’s a bit wild that it’s releasing so relatively soon without any gameplay footage or real hype yet, but heck: it’s better than announcing and showing something years before it’s ready, eh?
