See Close Encounters Of The Third Kind In Movie Theaters

Close Encounters

If I can guess anything about the demographics of our classy, attractive, and intelligent Cultured Vulture readers, it’s that most of us weren’t alive, or were too young to have seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind when it was first released into theaters in late 1977. At a sprightly 36 years old, I certainly was.

Not that I’ve had any particular desire to see it in theaters or anything, but now that the option is available, I might consider buying a ticket if I’m off work from my day job as a supermarket clerk on September 1st, the one and only night it will be shown. After all, this movie represents the first of the big special effects spectacles from Spielberg. Sure, the mechanical shark in Jaws was pretty impressive, but it was nothing compared to what we saw at the end of Close Encounters.

This is all in anticipation, of course, of a 40th anniversary special edition release of the film on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra that will be in stores on September 19th.

Hat tip to Dread Central for being one of the first media outlets to break the news.
