Fourty years after its original release, Day of the Dead is getting a full 4K restoration via Scream Factory, arriving June 16 as a limited-edition 4-disc UHD Collector’s Edition. The set marks the first time George A. Romero’s 1985 film has been presented in 4K, sourced from the original interpositive and finished with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
The release includes a rigid slipcase and collectible lobby cards, alongside a substantial package of new and archival extras. These include a new audio commentary, seven new interviews, two new featurettes, and multiple audio options (Atmos, 5.1, 2.0 mono, plus isolated score/effects tracks).
The restoration follows a lengthy search for suitable film elements, led by Radial Entertainment’s Jeff Roland, who ultimately located the materials needed to complete the project. Composer John Harrison has endorsed the result, noting improvements in both picture and sound quality.
Day of the Dead is the third entry in Romero’s original zombie trilogy, following Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978). It’s widely regarded as a defining work in the genre, particularly for its practical effects by Tom Savini and its more cynical tone. It also keeps getting absolutely terrible sequels and remakes for no reason.
