Ryan Gosling To Play Young Willy Wonka?

So it’s all in the rumor stage right now, but some folks are reporting that Ryan Gosling is in the running to play a younger version of the great Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka. Who the hell knows, but I’m certainly down. Can you believe there are even certain writers who think that Gosling is “too basic” to play the iconic character? Not cool! Anyone who’s seen Gosling’s recent work knows that he’s fairly versatile. He certainly won my respect with his roles in Drive and Only God Forgives. I say if this thing is going to happen, let’s give this beautiful man a chance.

So, yeah. I had no idea that a Willy Wonka prequel was happening. David Heyman, who worked on the Harry Potter movies and now the Fantastic Beasts series will be producing the movie and Simon Rich, who wrote the script for Inside Out is going to pen the screenplay.

There are no plot details yet, of course, but as best as I can tell this is going to be about Wonka’s meeting with the Oompa-Loompas, and will take place in the Gene Wilder universe. Although I dug Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for its sheer lunacy, as far as I can tell, I hold a severely minority opinion here. Well. So much for that. And the Gene Wilder version is objectively better anyway.
