In a recent report by Polygon, which spoke about the ongoing exclusives problem that the Xbox One faces, it’s mentioned that Microsoft could be looking to acquire the likes of EA, Valve and Bluehole, the creators of the widely successful PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The report, which cites an anonymous source that’s close to Microsoft, mentions that they’ve heard whispers of Microsoft planning an acquisition of the three brands, which Microsoft certainly have the capital to pull off.

At first hand, this seems like the kind of rampant speculation that could easily be dismissed as “lunacy”, but this is a world where Vince McMahon was able to relaunch the XFL, so nothing is off-limits. If Microsoft want to own three of the biggest names in the gaming industry right now, there’s a chance that could come to fruition. It’s also a guaranteed way of ensuring a bolstered first-party portfolio, albeit a really expensive one.

Still, even if these conversations are taking place at Microsoft HQ, that doesn’t mean Phil Spencer or Larry Hryb are guaranteed to turn up on an EA or Bluehole Press Conference to announce the purchase, similar to how Vince McMahon turned up on WCW Nitro to announce he’d bought WCW. That’s two Vinnie Mac references in one news story. You’re welcome.

A move like this would change the landscape of the gaming industry in new and unprecedented ways, so what do you think about the potential of this story? Would Microsoft be able to purchase any of these companies? Sound off in the comments.
