The Room Finally Getting A Wide Theatrical Release

Nearly fifteen years after its original release, Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic The Room will finally receive a wide release across cinemas in the US. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will play in 600 theaters on January 10 courtesy of Fathom Entertainment, the same folks responsible for Batman: The Killing Joke’s wide release. Tickets for The Room can be purchased here.

The Room was originally released in 2003, where Wiseau paid to have it play in one cinema in Los Angeles in order for it to be eligible for Oscar consideration (seriously), and since then, it has enjoyed a hugely successful run of cult screenings all over the world, many of which are attended by Wiseau. Aside from the film’s RiffTrax event, which played in around 700 screens, this will be the only time The Room has received any kind of wide theatrical release. A trailer for Best F(r)iends, which stars Wiseau alongside Greg Sestero, who played as Mark in The Room, will play before the screenings.

Wiseau has been notoriously secretive about the source of The Room’s $6 million budget, and while it’s undoubtedly earned a ton of cash through its hundred of cult screenings in addition to DVD and merchandise sales, this wide release event will probably help it to finally break even, if it hasn’t done so already.

If you still haven’t seen it, James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, which chronicles the making of The Room, is still playing in cinemas. Franco received a Golden Globe nomination for his portal of Wiseau, so here’s hoping he also earns a well deserved Oscar for his performance as the elusive filmmaker.
