No news about Gold for Xbox though.

Psyonix have published a new blog post going into details about how Rocket League will work once it goes free-to-play, and it’s good news for anyone playing on PS4 and the Nintendo Switch. Players on both those platforms will no longer require PS Plus or Switch Online subscriptions respectively to enjoy Rocket League’s multiplayer.

These changes will go live when the free-to-play update launches, which Psyonix haven’t provided a release date for just yet. The developers have stated that they’ll be rolling out a new update in preparation, which is scheduled to drop around mid-September. The free-to-play update will then launch shortly after that.

Once Rocket League joins the ranks of free-to-play games, players will be able to use an Epic Games Account to utilise cross-progression, allowing them to play Rocket League and bring their profiles across all available platforms. It’s perfect for if you feel like have a quick game while you’re on the toilet. Let’s be honest, that’ll be the main use, right? Once the game goes free-to-play, it’ll launch on the Epic Games Store and no longer be purchasable via Steam, but if you’ve already got the game on Steam, it’ll still be supported going forward, including cross-play with EGS players.

The news of the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Rocket League being completely free-to-play, forgoing the online subscription price, is a huge benefit, and should bring even more new players to the game, particularly on the Nintendo Switch. However, the fact that Xbox Live Gold wasn’t mentioned in the blog post suggests that the Xbox One version will still require a Gold membership. Tough break, but you probably have Game Pass Ultimate anyway so who cares?
