After months of rumors and speculation as to who will take over the role of Batman in the DCEU now that Ben Affleck’s hung up his cape and cowl, Variety just reported that Robert Pattinson has been selected for the role. Yes, that Robert Pattinson: The former teen heartthrob from The Twilight Saga. No, he wouldn’t have been our first choice either, but we’re willing to give him a chance. Especially considering how impressive he’s been in some of his recent roles.
According to Variety, Pattinson is close to signing a deal to star in The Batman, which will be directed by Matt Reeves of Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fame. No other cast members have currently been announced.
Pattinson first rose to fame with his role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, before the Twilight movies made him a household name. While he probably wouldn’t have been the first choice to play Batman for many fans, Pattinson has worked hard to break away from his teen heartthrob persona, and has consistently delivered strong performances in films such as Life, The Lost City of Z, and Good Time. Some fans will also feel that he may be too young to play Batman, but Warner Bros. seems to have deliberately chosen a younger actor so he can carry the franchise for many years to come. Seeing as Pattinson is obviously much younger than Affleck, it seems likely that The Batman will be a prequel focusing on the hero’s early crime-fighting days.
The Batman has suffered from a notoriously troubled production history, with Ben Affleck’s departure casting doubt on whether it would even be made. However, with Pattinson now all but confirmed to star, filming should finally begin in November, with a release date set for June 25, 2021.
