Resident Evil 3: How To Open Yellow Locks

Don't eat yellow locks.

Though not quite as bad for it as lot of its series brethren, Resident Evil 3 doesn’t always tell the player what they have to do and instead depends on them to figure out the obscure solutions for themselves. If you’ve come across one of the many yellow locks dotted around Raccoon City, you probably understand what we mean.

These yellow locks can be found pretty far and wide in the Downtown area of Resident Evil 3, the first one being on a crate as you leave the Subway Station. So, how do you open them?

The good news is that you’re not missing something very simple: you have to follow the natural story progression to eventually unlock the lockpick, which can be used to open up these yellow locks.

To get to the lockpick, firstly you have to clear the fire in the alleyway in the Downtown area. Visit the Subway Office and then you should find the hose you need to extinguish it.

Once the fire is out, follow the path and then you will eventually find the bolt cutters in an open locker. Follow the linear path forward and you will eventually arrive at the Subway Power Substation and its Control Room, which is currently out of order.

Leave the Control Room and then move down the stairs. Hang a left and walk along the route until you see a dead man holding a Case in the corner.

Examine the Case and inside you will find your lockpick. You can then use this lockpick to open the fence gate that will take you through a seven-legged encounter you need to overcome to reset the subway route to make progress in the story.

You can always just backtrack and use your lockpick on the rest of the yellow locks you saw in Downtown, however.

Be sure to hold onto your lockpick for the majority of the game, it has uses right up until the very last level, at which point you can discard it.

Resident Evil 3 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We gave it an 8/10 score in our review:

“Resident Evil 3 is a mostly superb remake of a horror classic with many clever spins on the formula and fluid, enthralling gameplay. I just wish there was more of it.”
