Happy Happy, Joy Joy – The Ren and Stimpy Story Documentary Seeks Funding

If you grew up in the ’90s and didn’t watch Nickelodeon’s The Ren & Stimpy Show, you must have had a pretty drab childhood. The controversial children’s animated series about the adventures of a Chihuahua named Ren and a cat named Stimpy quickly became a hit because of its crazy characters, crass humour, gross-out moments, and its abundance of sexual innuendos. The off-colour humour embraced by the show was unusual for a children’s programme at the time, resulting in some of the more notorious moments (such as this infamous scene) sometimes being censored from when the episodes were broadcast.

The series lasted for a total of 52 episodes across four seasons, although creator John Kricfalusi, who always had a rocky relationship with Nickelodeon, was fired after season 2. He later returned for the adults-only spinoff Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon”, which finally brought the Chihuahua and cat duo into X-rated territory. Unfortunately, Adult Party Cartoon essentially killed any hope of Nickelodeon using the characters again, as the duo were associated with adult-oriented television. It’s for this reason that Ren and Stimpy duo won’t be appearing in the upcoming Nicktoons reboot movie, and it’s also for this reason that I won’t be watching said movie.

Nickelodeon may not want anything to do with Ren and Stimpy anymore, but fans still have a reason to sing Happy Happy Joy Joy. That’s because a Kickstarter campaign has been launched for a feature-length Ren and Stimpy documentary, which will appropriately be titled Happy Happy, Joy Joy – The Ren and Stimpy Story. Hardcore fans Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood will direct, with a ton of people who worked on the show set to be interviewed. The campaign has barely reached one-fifth of its $289,400 goal, so you’d better crack out your wallet if you want Ren and Stimpy to have the documentary they deserve. That toast sure isn’t gonna powder itself.
