Rainbow Six Siege’s New Operators Sound a Little Silly

Skull Rain DLC

The new operators for Rainbow Six Siege have just been revealed and are certainly on the Metal Gear Solid side of things. For a game that tries to keep its combat somewhat realistic, this is certainly stretching the believable.

Operation Skull Rain will bring with it two operators and a map, just like previous free expansions for the game. The map, situated in a Brazilian favela, will be the most destructible one yet, which is exactly what they said for the last new one. By the time the game is done, one of the maps will be a wet cardboard box.

However, the operators are always the focus of new DLC for Rainbow Six Siege, and that’s certainly the case for Skull Rain. Here’s who we’re getting from Brazil’s Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, or BOPE.

Caveira – Defense
Comes equipped with an M12 or SPAS-15 as a primary weapon, a PRB92 secondary weapon, and the choice of C4 or barbed wire. It’s her skill which is most interesting – Silent Step allows her to sneak up on enemies and then interrogate them to find out where their teammates are.

Capiṭo РOffense
Siege’s coolest named operator so far carries an M-249 or PARA-308, PRB92 for a secondary, and a choice of frag or stun grenades. Again, his skill is a little wild – a crossbow that fires “asphyxiating bolts that burn oxygen within a certain radius”, or “micro” smoke grenades.

As cool as these new operators may sound, they’re a step away from the realism that has kept Siege grounded for so long. Yes, you can set bear traps below windows, pilot drones around that can shock your enemies, and jump on what is basically a gatling gun, but as fantastical as they may sound, they are believable.

But these new operators? They sound ridiculous. They might just be saving up all their good ideas for the inevitable sequel because Capitão and Caveira seem really out of place, but you can bet that plenty of people will be playing as them still. Adding stealth elements into what is typically a frenetic game simply won’t work – it doesn’t seem likely that many will even have a chance to use the skill.

other changes to come with Skull Rain include angled grips, a surrender system for when you can’t handle the shame, and a Tactical Realism mode that strips away the HUD and takes things back to basics.

Season pass holders will be able to play the new map and operators on August 2, regular players will have to wait an extra week for the operators but will still have access to the map. Players will have to pay 25000 credits within the game to unlock them.
