In the third big announcement coming out of PlayStation headquarters today, Sony have announced that system software update 5.00 will be rolling out to PS4 users worldwide, bringing forth a host of changes and improvements.

Certain players will have already gotten to grips with 5.00 in a recent beta test, which included improvements to the Quick Menu and family management, but this update has a little bit more to offer than that. Sony are full of surprises today.

One of the biggest additions is ESL Team Tournaments. Regardless of how you feel about eSports, they’re here to stay, and PS4 has just become a friendlier place to that crowd. Players can now join teams online, register in upcoming tournaments, and generally show off how big their collective digital dick is.

Teams can have up to 100 members, but only Uncharted 4 and Mantis Burn Racing will be supported at launch. It probably won’t be long before Destiny, Call of Duty and other big name PS4 titles join that roster.

Update 5.00 also brings in the new family management system, which gives parents more agency in controlling what media the tykes consume when they take over the PS4. As part of the family system, users can now be managed individually and changes only affect who is signed-in at the time. Your 5 year old should find it very difficult to play Resident Evil 7 with these improvements without any inconvenience to your own account. Parents and guardians can also access these features from a smartphone or PC.

PS4 Pro users who like to stream also have some good news to look forward to, as they’ll now be able to stream to Twitch in 1080p at 60fps, if their internet can handle that anyway. Lord knows mine couldn’t. For a full list of what’s new, check out the patch notes from the beta announcement back in August, along with today’s additional improvements.
