It’s remarkable how something as small as letting you climb a ladder in Project Zomboid can feel like such a game-changer. It’s a reality as of Project Zomboid Build 42.22, using the interaction key or right-click menu. But right now, that feature is on the Pre-Release branch, so you may need to fiddle with a setting if you’re a pure vanilla player.
How to use a ladder
It’s super simple. In Build 42.22:
– Move close to a ladder placed on the map.
– Press E, the default interaction key.
– Alternatively, right-click the ladder tile and use its interaction menu.
– Check the destination before climbing, particularly when heading down.
You do not need a ladder-climbing mod for this feature in 42.22.
Why will the ladder not work?
First, check your installed version. Ladders cannot be used in any build of the game that is older than 42.22.
If you are on the correct build, move directly beside the ladder and try its right-click menu. With custom controls, check your interaction binding.
If you’re on the right build and still having issues, The Indie Stone asks players to reproduce it on a fresh save without mods before reporting it. It may also be down to a conflict with one or more mods. If you’re a long-time Zomboid player, it is usually “or more”.
Can zombies climb ladders?
No, thankfully. However, zombies can still be waiting at the bottom. You can basically trap yourself on a roof if you aren’t careful.
Look below before descending and plan what you will do after reaching the ground. A ladder provides a route between floors, not a guarantee that either end is safe.
Can you move ladders?
You can use ladders fixed in place around Knox Country. The patch notes say previously moved ladders should remain where they were, but do not present this as a new portable-ladder system.
How do you access Build 42.22?
Back up your saves, right-click Project Zomboid in Steam, open Properties, then select Pre-Release under Game Versions & Betas.
The Indie Stone recommends stable for ordinary play and warns that test-build saves are not guaranteed to remain compatible. Use a separate test survivor if you only want to try the ladders, as it’s not worth maybe blowing up your save. Your longest-lived character should probably not try out being a ladder stuntman.
Project Zomboid is available now on Steam in Early Access.
