Preacher Drops Teasers For Fourth And Final Season

In a world of shows being cancelled prematurely, Preacher at least got an advance warning.

Despite AMC’s adaptation of Garth Ennis’s comic Preacher pulling in more-than-respectable ratings, with the second and third seasons sitting pretty with over 90% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, fans were in a constant limbo state of worrying whether the network would pull the plug. The mainstream media may be more comfortable with comic books these days, but it seems that only extends to pretty people in spandex beating up hordes of CG’d monsters. It definitely doesn’t extend to anything with a main character called ‘Arseface’.

So audiences were disappointed but not surprised when it was announced that season four of Preacher would be its last. This has, however, given it enough remaining runtime to give its narrative a proper, meaty conclusion, rather than cutting things off in midstream. The teaser shows us God (Mark Harelik) claiming it’s all been part of His ineffable plan, hinting both that everything that’s happened so far has been preordained, and towards a final confrontation with the big cheese Himself, which is about as climactic as you can get.

The third season left off on a similar confrontation between the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) and Satan (Jason Douglas), which – long story short – ended with Satan dying, and one Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor) taking over the day-to-day management of hell. This should give you some idea of the tone of the piece, which decidedly isn’t for everyone.

Anyone hoping for more Garth Ennis adaptations won’t have too long to wait, though – this month sees the release of The Boys, an adaptation of an Ennis comic following a vigilante group who take on corrupt superheroes. Like Preacher, it’s got Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached as executive producers, and it seems that in the role of picking comic books that would make good TV, Rogen has finally found his peace, as well as a position that’s perhaps better-suited to his particular skillset than playing the same mopey stoner over and over and over.
