Washing is a new mechanic in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that helps you to clean your Pokémon and also raise your friendship levels. If you’re trying to evolve Pichu or simply grow your bonds with your Pokémon, it’s an essential feature of the game.
To wash Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, you must first make some progress in the game and attend your first day of school in Mesagoza. When the Treasure Hunt begins and you can start exploring the open world of Paldea properly, you will unlock the ability to throw a picnic, which is where you can wash your Pokémon.
To throw a picnic, you must first be out in nature, so basically anywhere where you can normally catch Pokémon. You won’t be able to pitch a picnic in a city, for instance.
Once out in nature, press X to open your menu, then select Picnic. Place your picnic down, then approach the Pokémon you want to wash and press X. Follow the instructions on screen to lather and then rinse your Pokémon. Once they’re fully washed, your Pokémon will sparkle and the sequence will be complete and your friendship level should increase.
