Pokémon GO August Events: Community Day, Heatran Raids & Dragon Research

Pokémon GO finish these tasks.

Pokémon GO

As August draws to a close, there’s no taking the foot off the pedal for Niantic. While the reward weeks from GO Fest may have ended, there’s still plenty to keep you interested. A chance in the T5 raid boss, a re-do of the Dragon Timed Research and a Community Day vote are all on the horizon beginning today.

New T5 Raid Boss – Heatran

As the Genesect raids end, it’s time to welcome back Heatran. From August 21st 1pm PDT (8pm GMT/9pm BST) until September 10th 1pm, Heatran will take over as T5 raid boss. The Fire/Steel type Pokémon has already made the rounds a couple of times, but the plus side of this is that there’s a chance to encounter its pink-eyed shiny form.

Due to its double Ground type weakness, you’ll be looking to bring the likes of Groudon, Rhyperior, Garchomp, Swampert and just about any Pokémon that can learn Earthquake. It is also weak to Water and Fighting, so good back up choices would be the likes of Kyogre and Machamp.

Dragon Week Timed Research Makeup

Due to apparent issues that occurred in the game during Dragon Week, Niantic have decided to allow everyone access to a new Timed Research, that will be live from August 21st 8am until August 26th 10pm local time. This Research will have different tasks than last time, including making a certain number of Nice and Great throws, and catching a set number of Pokémon.

Though the tasks are different, the rewards are the same, the most important of which are two more Deino encounters. Deino, while a good Pokémon anyway, has a newly released and well sought after shiny form, so be sure to complete this research before the end time.

Community Day September and October Vote

Niantic have gotten into the habit of letting us choose the upcoming Community Day Pokémon via a Twitter poll, and these next couple of months are no different. Beginning on August 22nd 6pm PDT (August 23 1am GMT/2am BST), a poll will go live on the Pokémon GO Twitter account, and the two Pokémon out of the four that get the most votes will be chosen for September and October Community Days. The choices you will be able to pick between are listed below.

Charmander – Although he has already had a Community Day, Charmander is definitely a viable choice. Many newer players may not have the shiny version, which is well worth having for the black Charizard, and this time around he will have a new Fast Attack. Dragon Breath would give the Charmander family their first Dragon type Fast Attack, which accompanied with the Charged Move Dragon Claw, makes it a fully effective and quick Dragon type. With Mega Evolutions being introduced into the game soon, Charmander may well get your vote.

Caterpie – This cute little Bug type Pokémon may not have much use in the game generally, but having never had a Community Day before, players may be eager to get the gold colour shiny form of Caterpie. Upon Evolving to Butterfree, you’ll get the Charged Attack Hurricane. A flying move that is super effective against Fighting, Grass and Bug is definitely a help, but unless you don’t have the shiny form, chances are that Caterpie won’t be getting your vote.

Grimer – Grimer is an interesting one because it has both a Kanto and Alolan form, both of which you’ll have the chance to get shiny if it gets a Community Day. The Kanto form will be in the wild, and Alolan form will be in Raids, and evolving either will give your Muk the Charged Attack Fire Punch. A super quick Fire type is a handy addition to either Muk, and may well sway your vote, if the awesome looking shiny forms don’t do that already.

Porygon – Porygon is the only Pokémon on this list whose shiny form isn’t in the game yet, so if you’re looking for a cool new shiny Pokémon, cast your vote this way. Not only will Porygon get its blue and white shiny form released, it also gets a brand new move in the form of Tri Attack. Not in the game yet either, Tri Attack will have the chance to drop your opponents’ Attack and Defence, making it potentially lethal in PvP battles.

Wherever you want to cast your vote, make sure to do so on the Twitter poll when it goes live, and don’t forget those Heatran raids and the Dragon Research!
