Poem of the Week: Maiya Elali – ‘On the Flip Side’

2nd Place
Sian Abrahams – ‘Stitches’

Threadbare I sit and wait for the heavy heels to stop their pounding,

I pray that amongst the fray, colour remains and ties are still salvageable.

Sodden Is the very fabric that sews a story. Ingrained is the heavy rubble.

The weight of the load is dragged and shifted around the room, looking for perfect alignment, contained in four walls.

Disappearing into the fray, the fabric, the furniture I sit and look out of the window.

Bleaching of the colours, bleaching of the details, until I am unrecognisable.

Vivid colours only remembered in a blink, in a corner, in a seam. Once seen by someone with an eye for colour.

Distressed is the fabric of this chair. Another has sat upon me, stroked me, caressed me, memorised me.

I can only remain still while you savour my richness with your back to me.

I can only be still when the beast inside you sees fit to damage my fabric with scratches.

They feel gentle and pleasurable but they wear my fragile making.

That back, moves further and further away. A thick plaited thread connected.

Over there you look like a rag doll. Simple portrayal of a man, full of stuffing, but when you sat with your back to me, I could trace the line of embroidered experience. A badge which identifies you, covered with silk patches.

Our colours match  but we are made up of different textures? Is that the reason for our clash?

You do not answer.

I knew you would not. I may see your vivid colours behind your neutral silk, but you can not see mine anymore through the fading.

Or if you did, you saw them as a viewpoint. One that is uneasy on the eye and palate after too long.

Although…you mused over me for long enough? There was something in the fabric that pleased you? Pleased the senses. The senses, ah yes there it is!

The rag doll still stands in the corner, back facing the faded chair, joined by a thread.

How  long is a piece of string I cry?!
He does not answer and she carries on moving between four seamless walls.
