We are almost halfway through 2015 already. That doesn’t have anything to do with bringing you our new Poem of the Week, but if you need a minute to let that sink in and feel completely mortal, go right ahead. I’ll wait.
WELCOME BACK. Now, let’s get down to some poetry, shall we? Our entrants this week have been some of our most diverse yet with each submission being intrinsically different to the next. Before we bring you the winner, here are the amazing runner-ups.
3rd Place
Glen Armstrong – ‘Drunk on Christmas Eve’
We huddled. We swapped parts.
We sang until the song
almost opened up to invite us in.
Heaped upon each other
like mighty rat-rods,
we valued power over safety,
the parking lot over the pew.
Having forsworn leaping
and faith and the elements,
we hoisted winter coats
many sizes too big
from our hangdog shoulders
to the place a deep breath
strives for. Inside the church
they feigned joy,
retracing that magic baby’s birth,
their pinched expressions
of love betraying
the horror they knew
would come in the spring
after that divine
little peanut has his say.
