In a story that might have slipped under your radar, Sony has revealed that they will be increasing the price of the one-month and three-month PlayStation Plus plans to an as yet undisclosed total. It will have no effect on annual subscriptions.

“We are dedicated to bringing PlayStation Plus members the best possible service with the most compelling content,” Sony said in a statement. “From 1st September 2015 we will be increasing the price of monthly and three month PlayStation Plus subscriptions in line with market conditions. We will continue to invest in PS Plus to ensure an unparalleled experience, featuring the best quality games and features.”

Saying that the price raise in “in line with market conditions” is a bit vague and cynical. If they’re referring to competing with Xbox Live, that’s a statement which is expecting us to be naive considering how much more popular PSN is at this moment in time. The fact that annual plans will not be affected indicates that Sony are trying to push its customers towards a tied-in deal.

If they’re going to be increasing the price, they should also consider raising the quality. The service is constantly down for maintenance and is notorious for poor security. Its free monthly games have also been below standards in recent months.
