Platinum Games Says Microsoft Aren’t Fully To Blame For Scalebound Cancellation

"Both sides failed."

Scalebound

The studio responsible for the development of Scalebound, Platinum Games, has said that the blame for its cancellation should not entirely be placed on Microsoft. Following the news that the title had been canned, the publisher faced a barrage of criticism from fans who felt they had wrongly halted work on the game.

Platinum Games studio head Atsushi Inaba spoke to Video Game Chronicle to explain how his team were uncomfortable that their partners at Microsoft took the blunt of the criticism. “Watching fans getting angry at Microsoft over the cancellation wasn’t easy for us to watch,” said Inaba. “Because the reality is, when any game in development can’t get released it’s because both sides failed.”

“I think there are areas where we could’ve done better and I’m sure there are areas that Microsoft as a publishing partner wish that they could’ve done better. Because nobody wants a game to be cancelled.”

Scalebound was one of the most highly anticipated Xbox exclusive titles up until its cancellation in 2017. An open world RPG with some character action influences, players would have been able to utilize a companion dragon to fight enemies and complete quests.
