At the heart of any empire is the colorful cast of characters that can shape its successes and failures. Players will have the opportunity to build their dynasties in Old World as they forge their path in Antiquity. To better establish the dream-team ruling family, it’s critical to understand the make up of every character.
Here are the main stats for characters in Old World:

And here’s everything you need to know about character stats in Old World.
Characteristics
All characters will have four stats that define their bonuses and possible event actions:
– Wisdom
– Charisma
– Courage
– Discipline
These stats can be positive in value, in turn giving various resource bonuses, neutral with no effect, or even negative, which will penalize a sector of the player’s economy. In addition, depending on the character’s rank in the court, their characteristic ratings will have either greater or lesser impact on the faction as a whole.
Wisdom is the stat associated with science. Characters with high wisdom will provide bonuses to research and help speed up the discovery of new technologies.
Charisma is linked to civics and legal capital. Family members with higher charisma will increase the civic resource generation of the faction making it easier to enact new laws, as well as have a positive effect on family relations.
Courage affects training and all things military. Characters with a large courage stat will benefit the faction’s training resource generation. Moreover, courageous characters are typically quite proficient at unit command.
Discipline is the stat associated with money. Members of the court with a high discipline stat will increase money generation and may also come with city benefits, making them effective city governors.
Cognomen
Since a major component of Old World’s gameplay is establishing an emergent narrative and becoming the most prominent faction, character deeds and heroic actions are recorded in their title or Cognomen.
The only practical effect of a new character title is the increase of legitimacy, but from a narrative perspective the Cognomen exemplifies and emphasizes the character’s actions. For example, if the leader of the Roman faction settles a certain number of cities they will receive the “Founder” Cognomen, indicating the leader’s success at expanding their faction’s borders.
Traits
Characters in Old World are more than just a collection of stats and titles. Members of the court are also defined by their traits, specifically an archetype or class and collection of miscellaneous character traits. Archetypes directly affect the person’s stats and also define the kinds of roles they can take at court. For example, a Commander character can be a General or an Ambassador.
Miscellaneous traits are typically related to character events or their personality. They can usually be gained through random events or family association. These personality traits aren’t as prominent in their effect as Archetypes, but they’re no less vital to the overall character arc of the player’s emergent story.
Characters can make or break the development of a faction in Old World. The game does a great job of illustrating the messiness of human development, especially when it comes to leading an entire civilization and the trick is for players to manage the unpredictability of their family and court members to get the best out of uplifting or terrible situations. But most importantly, players can go have fun and come up with epic stories of their own.
