Official Trailer For Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse Promises A Horror Treat

Fancy a journey to the lighthouse?

For those eagerly awaiting a little glimpse into A24’s latest film The Lighthouse, directed by Robert Eggers, your wait is over. The official trailer for the movie is here, and it looks as amazing as we thought it would be. Don’t believe me? Have a look and prepare to be wowed.

Eggers’ previous film The Witch was a fantastic period piece, using the supernatural to discuss female sexuality, family and community. The success of the film has therefore led to the anticipation surrounding The Lighthouse, especially since we were only getting nuggets of information about it. All we knew was the casting of Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and the fact that the film was going to be shot in black and white. In an article from Birth.Death.Movies, Pattinson also infamously mentioned his desire to punch Eggers after being sprayed with water in the face repeatedly for a scene. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like Batman behaviour to me.

The film also had an amazing run at the Cannes Film Festival, which was frustrating since us common folk would need to wait before we got a chance to see it. Now we understand the black and white treatment, for this is also a period piece and is reminiscent of older horror movies like Nosferatu.

Both Dafoe and Pattinson play lighthouse attendants, where Dafoe seems to be dealing with some paranoia with regard to Pattinson’s character. He believes he is hiding something, but it is unclear whether this is real or if the isolation is somehow messing with his mind.

A24 is having an amazing run with Midsommar, which has so far made 29 million USD internationally and opened to rave reviews. Jordan Peele, director of Get Out and Us, lauded the film as an iconic pagan film, remarking that Midsommar has “the most atrociously disturbing imagery [he’s] ever seen on film”. And it looks like The Lighthouse is about to follow in its steps, adding to A24’s successful repertoire.

The Lighthouse will be in theatres October 18, 2019.
