"Love doesn't always end well."

My my Disney, you have been quite the busy bee. After the teaser trailer release for Mulan, we now have Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’s official trailer flying in, leaving us eager for this much-awaited sequel.

In the trailer, Aurora (Elle Fanning) has accepted Philip’s request for her hand in marriage. The dear prince has been recast, in case you were wondering why you didn’t recognise him at all. Harry Dickinson is stepping in to fill the shoes of Brenton Thwaites, who was unable to return for the sequel due to scheduling conflicts.

While Aurora is all exuberance and excitement at the proposal, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) doesn’t quite share in those same emotions. From the first movie we know that she was betrayed by the man she loved, so when she says, “Love doesn’t always end well”, I would agree that she knows what she’s talking about.

The next part of the trailer is where it gets interesting. When Maleficent and Aurora meet up with Philip’s family, his mother Queen Ingris (Michelle Pfeiffer) more or less insinuates that Maleficent isn’t suited for the mom role, which sends her spiraling into a blaze of fury. What appears to happen next is them waging war against Maleficent and her fighting back.

Fans feel that Maleficent’s seeming transition into evil in the trailer might be Disney throwing us off, that the true evil might be Queen Ingris and all Maleficent is really doing is protecting herself. The trailer ends with the exciting revelation of Maleficent’s people coming to claim her, which is news to us since we thought she was the last of her species.

The first movie’s success is what spurred on this whole journey of live action remakes. Where Maleficent succeeds is in the revisioning of the story, by taking a villain and making her the focal point of the storytelling. Each Disney live action remake tries to do something different, but as of now, Maleficent is just the best of them all.
