This Oculus Rift Lightsaber Demo is Too Much Awesome

Oh sweet, sweet virtual reality. Oculus Rift has been dominating the commercial deployment of virtual reality technologies, in a restrictive kind of way. Exclusive VR games like Dreadhall (utter, panic attack-inducing terror in a procedurally generated environment) and the multi-platform Minecraft experiences have set a very high bar for what is, at a layman’s level, readily accessible.

As thrilling a journey as current VR games offer, something new, and infinitely more mighty has dawned. No young (teen, adult, middle-aged, OAP etc) Jedi hasn’t dreamed of training against a remote just like Skywalker. Now we can.

Thanks to an Oculus Rift game where, with two Lightsaber-esque hilts, you can fight against a training remote to your Master’s content.

Whilst technical information seems vague concerning the ‘sabers’ Benjamin Teitler uses in the video, it certainly seems both responsive and immersive as the young Jedi has, what I jealously admit, is probably the time of his life.

Whilst being what I can only assume is a prototype, it brings a huge wedge of respectability to VR Gaming. Physical actions in 360 degree, VR environment, within a hugely niche geek setting screams investment and potential to any gamer and I for one, would be glad for some en-masse consumerism to bring this project to reality, whichever shape that may be.
