It’s A Bit Of A Stretch To Say Sam Fisher’s In Rainbow Six Siege

Who is this dude?

Ahead of the release of Rainbow Six Siege’s Operation Shadow Legacy, Ubisoft recently shared a quick glimpse at Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher who will be coming to the game as a new Operator under the pseudonym of Zero.

Well, they say Sam Fisher, but it seems to be in name only. I have no idea who this dude is.

Check out for yourself below.

Looking more like Frank Castle than Sam Fisher, the former of which is about anything other than stealth, it’s hard to see how exactly this is the talisman of one of Ubisoft’s most beloved (and forgotten) properties. I’ll say it again: it’s just not Fisher.

The trailer gives a quick glimpse at Fisher’s iconic green goggles, but it’s actually revealed to be a laser sight or some kind of attachment for his gun — that’s just mean. “Fisher” also pulls out a device that seems capable of turning off lights, which is admittedly more in keeping with the character.

The big thing, though: he isn’t voiced by Michael Ironside. The legendary voice of Fisher was used for a cameo in Wildlands, so it’s a bit of a mystery why he hasn’t done the same here. Maybe it’s down to the current worldwide situation, but as good as the impression is, it’s just not the same.

I’m fully open to artistic interpretation of iconic characters, don’t get me wrong, but not when said interpretations miss all of the beats that made those characters so iconic. Heck, even Elite Squad’s Sam Fisher looks closer to the real deal.

Maybe I’m being too cynical, but I would bet a good amount of money that the classic Splinter Cell look, goggles and suit and all, will come to Siege as an Elite set sometime down the line. Bookmark this article for six months from now.

I also wonder if Caveira being in Siege is the worst thing that could have happened for this crossover. The stealthy Defender has the perfect skill set for Fisher, so perhaps it comes down to Ubisoft now wanting two characters to feel so similar.

You don’t need me to tell you that Fisher deserves his own game again, not to go on a retirement lap around every other Tom Clancy property out there. Who knows, maybe Ubisoft are commissioning him out to gauge potential in his very own game again. At least we have that upcoming TV show.

More will be revealed about Sam Fisher on August 16th at the NA-Mini Major Finals for Siege.
